NARAL endorses Obama

Can we please put to rest the bogus argument that Obama is not sufficiently pro-choice?  Or is NARAL not pro-choice enough either, now that they aren't supporting Sen. Clinton?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080514/ap_o n_el_pr/obama_endorsement

"Pro-choice Americans have been fortunate to have two strong pro-choice candidates in Senator Obama and Senator Clinton, both of whom have inspired millions of new voters to participate in this historic presidential race," NARAL president Nancy Keenan said in a statement. "Today, we are proud to put our organization's grass-roots and political support behind the pro-choice candidate whom we believe will secure the Democratic nomination and advance to the general election. That candidate is Senator Obama."

See Illinois NOW for the entire quote:

I guess NARAL is now a bunch of misogynists.

Watch now as Hillary backers attack another asset to women and the progressive agenda because they didn't tie themselves to the anchor that is the NAFTA lady.

Wonderful news! A shame that Clinton supporters don't respect anyone who supports Obama.

Re: NARAL endorses Obama (1.00 / 2)

NARAL is a joke.  I guess they want a President who's "present" on important issues.

And why is NARAL so eager to destroy the first viable woman candidate.

If you've been following along the last few years at firedoglake, you would know exactly why NARAL has been a joke for way longer than two hours. Nice try though, guys, really.

Re: NARAL endorses Obama (2.00 / 1)

Apparently the issue of abortion rights is more important to them than the gender of the candidate.

Or how about, What's Wrong with Nancy Keenan?

Emily's List Response (none / 0)

http://www.emilyslist.org/news/releases/ 2008_naral_endorsement_malcolm_statement /

Statement from Ellen R. Malcolm on NARAL Endorsement in the Democratic Presidential Primary

The following is a statement from EMILY's List president Ellen R. Malcolm on NARAL's endorsement in the Democratic presidential competition:

"I think it is tremendously disrespectful to Sen. Clinton -- who held up the nomination of a FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B and who spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe vs. Wade -- to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process. It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them."

"Life is too short, time is too precious, and the stakes are too high to dwell on what might have been." Hillary Rodham Clinton - June 7, 2008
by twinmom on Wed May 14, 2008 at 03:28:05 PM EST

A juvenile concept of respect (2.00 / 1)

Endorsing a candidate is not an 'attempt to destroy' the other candidate. A vote for Hillary is not a vote against African Americans and a vote for Obama is not a vote against women. They picked the candidate they thought could best advance their agenda. That is not 'disrespectful' to anyone any more then someone voting for some one different then you is disrespectful to you.

Everyone does not need to agree with you to respect you.

by hankg on Wed May 14, 2008 at 03:43:16 PM EST

They are shoving Obama down throats (none / 0)

And this was a horrible move. NY NARAL even issued a statement disagreeing with the national leadership based in D.C.
This decision was made internally by NARAL Pro-Choice America, based in Washington D.C., and without the consultation of the NARAL state affiliates across the country. NARAL Pro-Choice New York will not be issuing an endorsement at this time. NARAL Pro-Choice New York believes that this endorsement in the Democratic primary is premature.
